Welcome to the world of long-term travel.

When it comes to this kind of travel, I get a lot of emails asking for my “secret.”

How do you travel so often and for so long? how did you quit your job and escape the grind? You must have a trust fund to afford all that, right?

Fel.

I’ve written about how I manage to travel in the past (over and over again), but people still wonder if I am holding something back.

What am I leaving out? What, they ask, is my secret to escaping the cubicle and being a nomad? Did I win the lottery? Do my parents pay for everything?

There must be something that makes me so special.

Well, here it is! The big secret to traveling long-term is…

Ingenting.

Absolut ingenting!

There is no special secret.

Vagabonds, nomads, and long-term travelers are nothing special. We have no superpowers or secret Swiss bank accounts. We don’t have a money tree or the ability to teleport everywhere.

Of course, privilege will unavoidably play its part, but we’re not unique or doing anything special. This kind of travel has been done for decades, by people from all parts of the world, with a variety of backgrounds.

Long-term travelers are just like you.

When I first discovered long-term travel, I thought the backpackers I had met in Chiang Mai had found some secret to life I didn’t know existed.

But once I got on the road myself, I saw that there was no secret. I wasn’t unique or special. Millions of people annually did this. even people with virtually no money were making it work.

I had left home thinking I was going on an exciting adventure few people go on — then I went to Khao San road and hung out in Amsterdam during the summer. In those places, I met travelers young and old doing exactly the same thing as me — and none of them were trust fund babies.

These travelers just did what they wanted — a revolutionary idea for me at the time. but now, after years of travel, I realize that it’s not so revolutionary. If people really want something, they do it. If you want a big-screen TV or a new computer, you find a way to make it happen. If you really want to eat sushi for dinner, you are going to have sushi for dinner.

If you really want to travel, you will do that, too.

Because, just like you find a way to pay for that TV or your new car, these travelers simply set up their life so that they could afford to travel.

The only thing these people had that I didn’t have before was the desire to do what they wanted to do, free from the expectations of society, just because they took pleasure in it.

They simply said, “I want to travel” and then worked to make it happen.

They saved more, they took second jobs, they stayed home instead of going out to eat or drink, they found work overseas. They did whatever it took.

As the saying goes, where there’s a will, there’s a way.

It is that simple.

People ask me about whether I worry about bills, retirement, and my future. To be honest, not really.

When you travel long-term, all those things disappear. You have no bills because you have no home. You just spend what you spend from day to day (which is usually less than $50 a day).

My mother told me I should start saving more for my retirement so I could…wait for it…travel more.

Then she stopped herself and said, “Well, I guess you do that already, so never mind!”

I’m a big believer in the idea that we shouldn’t work our lives away and that we should take short breaks to pursue our passions. Why should I spend my best years in an office, saving money for an age I may not even see, or if I do see it, might be too sick to enjoy?

Yeah, we long-term travelers save a bit for a rainy day, but we don’t worry about the future. We enjoy now. Take care of your present, and your future works itself out. When I stop traveling, I’ll figure out what is next.

So, when you ask travelers how they do it, they aren’t lying when they say there is no secret. We simply made a conscious decision to do it and, after that, just worked toward our goal, saving money and making plans just like what you would do for any other goal or venture in your life.

That’s the secret. So, know that you know it, go start making your travel dreams come true!

Tat Kuang Si: Det 3-lagade vattenfallet

Beläget nästan 30 kilometer söder om stadens centrum, är den trestegerade Tat Kuang Si (eller Kuang Si Falls, Kuang Xi Falls) en av de bästa turistmålen i Luang Prabang, Laos. De naturligt terrasserade mini-poolerna som jag såg först var inte fallen ännu. Dumt mig, verkligen. Uppenbarligen är vid basen av huvudvattenfallet flera mini-fall som sjunker från låga nivåer och sedan flödar genom ett tåg med små pooler som ser ut som en stor kalksten trappa som inleder besökare till själva vattenfallet. Utforska Tat Kuang Si Park

Efter att ha fått min biljett följde jag den väl trampade spåret in i skogen. Två minuter in i vandringen nådde jag Tat Kuang Si Bear Rescue Center. Centret grundades av Free The Bears Fund, en organisation som grundades 1995, har blivit ett hem för ett antal björnar som räddats från olaglig handel och gallodling. Det är bara en av de många Bear Sanctuaries som byggs och inrättas i Indien, Kambodja, Vietnam och Laos.

En ViewDeck ligger parallellt staketet för besökare att ha en bra plats att observera dessa härliga varelser. I det ögonblicket valde jag dock att bara ta ett par foton och fortsätta gå. I mitten kunde jag redan höra det höga rumlande ljudet från klippan som hoppade-lyckligt vatten. När jag fick mitt första glimt av strömmen, trodde jag att jag tittade på fallen redan när det faktiskt bara var en av de många uppsättningarna av terrasser vid basen av ett mycket större vattenfall. Ett dussin turister tog ett dopp vid den turkosströmmen och njöt av vattnet som flödade graciöst från den övre terrassen ner till den sluttande floden.

Jag såg inte att spåret fortsatte längre uppåt förrän Charlotte påpekade det och vi började vandra igen. På den andra nivån var en annan underbar uppsättning fall, högre men ändå mindre grandios än jag förväntade mig eftersom den inre dumma i mig trodde att det var vattenfallet. Jag antog att det var baserat på det stora antalet människor på platsen. Dussintals turister simmade i denna del av strömmen. Många av dem spelade Tarzan, apa svängde vid ett rep och hoppade sedan in i den kristallklara poolen nedan.

Wine, gastronomy, boutique accommodations and a low-key vibe. Valle de Guadalupe offers this and much more making it an ideal travel destination for foodies and wine aficionados.

Located in Baja California, Mexico, this underrated area of the country is a great place for a fun weekend with friends, a romantic getaway, or for those who are simply wanting to eat good food and drink excellent wine.

The accommodations and restaurants blend almost seamlessly into the desert landscape, and you’ll almost always have dogs, cats and livestock nearby.

While it has quite a rustic, farm feel to it, visitors here seem to dress to impress.

You’ll spot tourists, photographers and “Instagrammers” dressed for the destination — wearing a desert-inspired colour palette that suits the scene.

We recently ate and drank our way through the Valle de Guadalupe (Guadalupe Valley) on a week-long trip and are already missing the region!

About Valle de Guadalupe

Most travellers to Mexico have heard about Cabo San Lucas, Cancun, Mexico City, and Oaxaca, but surprisingly, Valle de Guadalupe remains somewhat hidden. For oenophiles, this is one of the best places to visit in Mexico.

Of the 14 wine regions in the country, this is Mexico’s best. The quality of wine in the Valle completely surprised us!

If you’re into big, bold, juicy, oaked reds, you will not be disappointed. but don’t worry if you’re not, there are some excellent white and rose wines as well.

The Valle de Guadalupe (Valle) has been producing wine for around 200 years, with this region contributing to 90% of the wine produced in the country. and while wine consumption may not be as popular in Mexico as beer and tequila, it’s getting there.

Vines and more vines
The area is also known for its stylish accommodations, sophisticated atmosphere, and awarded gastronomy — most of which are reached by driving down dusty, dirt roads.

With the Pacific ocean nearby, the area creates a microclimate of its own, which is similar to the Mediterranean. Grapes and other fruits and vegetables are easily grown here, while the seafood is pulled fresh from the ocean just 30 minutes away.

5 best Wineries in the Valley

Unlike other places in the world where we’ve travelled for wine, all of the wineries in the Valle de Guadalupe charge for tastings — anywhere from $10 – $50, usually for 4 small glasses.

It’s recommended to make a reservation for tastings, not only to ensure you get a spot, but to make sure they are open. weekends are busy, as are the summer months and holidays.

There are numerous wineries to explore and wines to sample, here’s a quick list of our favourites.

1. Baron Balch’e

If you’re into aged red wines, Baron Balch’e is your place. This well-known winery offers 18 different labels — 14 reds, 3 whites and 1 Clarette.

Included in the tasting is a tour of the cellar, which is a nice addition. There’s also a restaurant on-site. Baron Balch’e offers 5 different packages at different prices and levels of wine quality: A – E.

If you’re a red wine drinker, I recommend the premium tour “D” for 600 pesos ($30), or at the very least, tasting “C” for 330 pesos ($16.50). We lucked out and were given the tour by Norman who is an expert Sommelier. ask for him if you can!

2. Retorno

This super small, unassuming place is where to go for a chilled-out setting (ie: non-Instagram), but with a cool winemaker and fantastic reds. This is a great family-owned place.

The winemaker gave us barrel tastings, we sampled some newer wine out of the metal vat and enjoyed the conversation. Plus, Carlota the labrador dog was so sweet!

Tastings here are cost effective at 140 pesos ($7) for the basic or$200 ($12) for the complete. For whites, the Teo is oaky on the nose and slightly fruity to taste.

For reds, don’t miss sampling the Palabra, Retorno, and the Década (which celebrated the winery’s tenth anniversary) — all are oaked, dry, bold, and complex.

3. Relieve

Relieve is completely different from the two wineries above. This stylish, modern winery and vineyard is surrounded by rows of vines and has a nice patio available for a drink.

We had been enjoying wines by relieve while living in Playa del Carmen, so it was nice to be at the source!

The tastings here are 650 pesos and again, I recommend doing the premium tasting. The Tempranillo and Merlot are fantastic with lots of oak, deep red fruits, and a long finish. The Nebbiolo isn’t on the tasting menu but is a great bottle as well.

4. Don Tomás

The setting here is stunning. You can drink wine and have lunch at the tables that are completely surrounded by vines, or on one of the other decks.

We weren’t impressed with the lack of information provided with the tastings here, but the quality of wine made up for that. Also, a small cheese and bread board is included with the tastings — which is the only place in the Valley we found that.

The premium tasting is 400 pesos ($20) and included all red wines, while the basic is 250 pesos ($12.50).

5. Vena Cava

The hillside here was dug out to create a natural cooling system for the barrels. The tastings are held here as well.

A really cool feature of Vena Cava is the fishing boat which has been flipped upside down and acts as the roof. Vena Cava is all about recycling and reusing.

Sadly, when we visited they weren’t offering the premium tasting. We did enjoy the regular tasting and learned a lot about the winery from the guide.

After you’re done with the tastings, make sure to eat at the onsite food truck, Troika. order the oysters, cabbage, and mushroom risotto — you can thank me later.

The basic tasting is $18, two natural wines and two regular wines is $20, four natural wines is $35. If you want to do a premium tasting, you have to reserve in advance.

Other Must-Visit Wineries:

Montefiori (Vinos Paolini) – Mexican wines with an Italian heart is the slogan here. Italian winemaker who has been in Mexico since 1985. This is a classy setting with a nice view. 450 pesos ($22) for a premium tasting. find it on the map, here.

Emevé – modern winery, nice vineyard views. The explanation of the wines was informative and the wines are good as well. 250 pesos ($12) for 3 tastings, or 400 pesos ($19) for 4 tastings with a souvenir glass. Click here to see it on the map.

Cava Maciel – A small, more off-track winery that is definitely worth the visit. The explanation of the wines here is top-notch. The winemakers here are passionate, fun, and informative. We really enjoyed the wines. It’s 350 pesos ($17) for a basic tasting and 500 pesos ($24) for a premium one. find it here.

Viña de Frannes – one of the most gorgeous lunch and tasting settings! Viña de Frannes is one of the only places doing a Cabernet Franc with 12 months in French oak — it was fantastic. try the rib eye pizza and ceviche, all was so good. find it here.

Casta – another place that includes a cellar tour in the tasting. In fact, we actually did the tasting down in the cellar! ganska cool. The staff here were great and many details and information were given about the wines we were sampling. The wines here were quite nice as well. Tastings are between 200 – 400 pesos ($10 – $20). find it on the map here.

Magoni – lovely area under a huge oak tree. The Nebbiolos are good and they also offer a balsamic vinegar tasting. regular four tasting costs 220 pesos ($11), six tastings cost 280 ($14) and the reserva tasting with 4 wines and snacks costs 650 ($33).

Vinos Dubacano – our driver and his family actually own this tasting room, which is surrounded by vines. inside has sort of a bar feel to it, and while we sat at the counter, our driver explained their wine and we sampled many! They offer 5 differENT typer av provsmakningar, med premiumprovningen kommer in på 350 pesos ($ 17,50) – för 5 glas. Hitta dem här.

Vinicola Kruger – Detta är en funky plats med några bord och stolar och en förhöjd, konverterad fraktcontainer för ett sittplats på taket. Vi besökte inte de mer kommersiella vingårdarna: El Cielo, Monte X’anic och La Cetto, även om de är populära.

En vingård som vi besökte och inte rekommenderar är Lechuza. Varje smakglas var samma pris som ett fullstor, vanligt glas vin. Deras resonemang för det var att vi betalade mer på grund av den information som vi fick under provsmakningen.

Ingen information gavs om vinerna som vi inte kunde ha hittat på baksidan av flaskan, och vi ignorerades för det mesta. Dessutom är inställningen här precis utanför motorvägen. Personligen var det inte vår favoritplats.

Det finns många restauranger att äta på, men det är mina rekommenderade platser.

1. Deckman’s

Michelin-stjärniga kocken Drew Deckman är chef för utomhusköket här. Om du bara äter på en restaurang, gör den den här och se till att du är där för att njuta av solnedgången!

Konceptet här är lokalt anskaffat, gård-till-bord, långsam mat. Det är avslappnat men ändå elegant.

Vi tittade på solnedgången över vingården och bergen i fjärran medan vi satt under ett tornigt tall. När solen gick ner blinkade Fairy -lamporna ovanför matgästerna och köket – och skapade en magisk scen.

Jag rekommenderar havsbasen och kort revben för elnätet och rödbetor för en start. Maten och platsen är förstklassig.

2. Finca Altozano

En annan populär plats för lunch eller middag. Inställningen här är otrolig och det är ett bra ställe att ta bilder och njuta av solnedgången över dalen.

Vi hade bara en lätt måltid här av Risotto och Burrata sallad att dela, men maten var god, restaurangen var riktigt upptagen och utomhusköket var fantastiskt.

3. Fauna

Paris is filled with well-known attractions: the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre, Versailles, the catacombs, the Pantheon, the Arc de Triomphe, Sacre-Coeur. The list goes on. There are so numerous remarkable sites here that you could spend days (heck, even weeks) just seeing the main, many well-known ones.

But there’s much more to Paris than the sites that attract thousands upon thousands of visitors each day.

While I was living Paris the past few months, I made it my mission to see some of the much more unusual, lesser-known (but equally awesome) attractions (that didn’t come with the aggravating crowds that make so numerous of Paris’ attractions unbearable).

And, while some of the things on the list below might not be “super secret” attractions or activities, they do fall into the category of “overlooked attractions” so I included them.

Here are some of the best off-the-beaten-path things to see and do in Paris:

1. Le Manoir de Paris

This is where macabre museum meets haunted house. various rooms highlight some of the much more unsettling aspects of Paris’s long and typically dark past, such as the Phantom of the Opera, vampires, or the crocodiles in the sewers. using real actors as well as animatronics, the city’s gruesome and unsettling history is brought to life in an interesting way. In addition to their museum, they also have escape rooms as well as different levels of intensity depending on how frightened you get!

2. Musée Édith Piaf

Édith Piaf is possibly the most well-known French singer from the 1930s to the 1960s, and know around the world for her songs La vie en rose and Non, je ne regrette rien (which appeared in the film Inception). She lived in a little house in the Ménilmontant district at the start of her career, which has been turned into a tiny museum dedicated to her. You get a peek at her life through her gold and platinum records, photographs, clothing, letters from fans, posters, recordings, and sheet music.

3. Musée Curie

Marie Curie was the first woman to win the Nobel prize (and the only woman to win it twice) for her research into radioactivity (a word that she invented). She was the first female professor at the university of Paris as well as the first woman to be entombed in the Panthéon on her own merits. located in the 5th arrondissement, this museum, in her old laboratory, highlights her radiological research. It’s insightful and eye-opening for anybody unfamiliar with her historic discoveries.

4. Archives Nationales

Opened in 1867, the national Archives houses thousands of historical files dating back to 625 CE. one of six national archives in the country, the museum sheds light on France’s turbulent past, offering nuanced historical details and context through permanent and short-term exhibitions.

Built by the purchase of Napoleon I, the building itself (known as the Hôtel de Soubise) is absolutely stunning. It is in the late Baroque style, embracing long columns and lots of statues and sculptures. It features immaculate grounds and gardens as well. They always hold a lot of good exhibitions too.

5. The Vampire Museum

Paris has a long history with the esoteric, one that is brought to life in this fascinating (if not macabre) museum founded by an eccentric scholar to showcase his knowledge of the undead and esoteric. here you’ll find vampire-killing kits, rare texts on demonology, and mysterious ancient relics. It’s a busy, eclectic, creepy museum that’s a feast for the eyes and one worthy of a check out if you’re whatsoever interested in much more obscure (and fanciful) tales. It’s a fun, kitschy museum.

6. The Gallery of Paleontology and Comparative Anatomy

Opened in 1898, this museum is home to over 1,000 animal skeletons from around the world, including complete skeletons of elephants, large cats, and even dinosaurs. It’s as interesting as it is unsettling: all the animals are facing the same way, making it look like you’re in the midst of some undead stampede!

7. petite Ceinture

In use from 1862 through 1964, the railway circling Paris was abandoned when the city expanded beyond its limits. It’s mostly hidden behind buildings and covered in wild plants and turf now, though some sections are now officially open to the public. You’ll find all sorts of flowers and street art along the tracks.

While some sections are illegal to visit, near Parc Georges Brassens you’ll find a section of the tracks known as the ‘Passage de la petite Ceinture’ that is both totally free and legal to visit. It’s located in the 15e arrondissement.

8. The Salvador Dalí Sundial

This surrealist sundial was created by world-renowned artist Salvador Dalí. located on Rue Saint-Jacques, it’s is a mix of a human face and a scallop shell (the symbol of the Camino to Santiago, because the street is named after the saint). While the sundial doesn’t actually work, it’s nevertheless an easy way to see a piece of artwork by one of the most well-known artists in the world.

9. Montmartre Cemetery

While the Père Lachaise Cemetery is the largest and many popular in Paris, for a much more secluded stroll, check out the Montmartre Cemetery. plenty of people check out the top of Montmartre for Sacré-Coeur and the view, but few take the time to wander this cemetery sitting at the foot of the district. It opened in 1825 and is home to numerous cobwebbed mausoleums, as well as a handful of stray cats. You won’t see numerous people here, so you can explore in peace.

10. The museum of Counterfeiting

Opened in 1972, this museum is home to counterfeit items that have been collected by France’s customs agents and police (as well as donated items from brands and consumers alike). There are over 500 items in the museum, ranging from counterfeit art and luxury goods to much more mundane items, like cleaning supplies. While some knockoffs are outstanding in their duplicity, it’s also funny to see just how bad some counterfeiters were!

11. Promenade Planteé (Coulée verte René-Dumont)

This tree-lined walkway is a greenbelt that extends practically 5km along the old Vincennes railway line. The railway line ceased functioning in 1969, with the park being inaugurated a few decades afterward. until new York built their High Line, it was the only elevated park in the entire world. (And, honestly, this is way nicer then the nyc High Line).

You’ll find lots of trees, flowers, ponds, and places to sit along this long path that stretches from Bastille to the edge of Paris. It’s a long, easy, and stunning walk. You won’t find numerous people here. even on a good day, it’s rather empty. It rapidly became one of my favorite things to do in Paris and I can’t recommend coming here enough!

12. Canal Saint-Martin

Stretching 4.5km, the Canal Saint-Martin is a man-made waterway commissioned by Napoleon. construction finished in 1825, connecting the Canal de l’Ourcq to the Seine through both above ground locks and underground tunnels. While not any secret spot (on a good day, you’ll find the canal lined with people), it’s mostly a spot for locals who want to have a picnic and relax. So, say no to the Seine, and come have your outdoor picnic along the canal. It’s much more unwinding and there will be fewer people!

The canal starts at place de Stalingrad and ends at Quai de la Râpée. Canal cruises last 2.5 hours and cost around 16 EUR per person.

13. Museé de Montmartre

Founded in 1960, this museum is located throughout two building that dates back to the 17th century. Over the years, the buildings were home to numerous well-known writers and painters. Efter att ha begränsats i våra hem i några månader på grund av samhällets karantän är det nu möjligt att utforska omvärlden igen. Idag börjar många destinationer på Filippinerna öppna igen. Strikta protokoll och krav i linje med hälso- och säkerhetsproblem finns emellertid fortfarande på plats. och denna politik varierar per destination och lokala myndigheter.

Den 15 november har Bohol börjat acceptera besökare som skulle besöka för möten, incitament, konventioner och utställningar (möss). De som skulle delta i evenemang som bröllop, återföreningar, årsdagar, födelsedagar och liknande fester är också tillåtna. Allt detta är under förutsättning att det finns minst 6 deltagare utanför Bohol. Om du kommer att resa till Bohol för sådana evenemang, här är kraven och saker du behöver veta innan ditt besök.

Uppdatering: Enligt den filippinska nyhetsbyrån kommer provinsen Bohol sannolikt att öppnas igen för inhemska turister i vecka 2 i december, men inget exakt datum har tillkännagivits ännu.

1. Negativt RT-PCR-testresultat

Ett negativt RT-PCR-testresultat från ett DOH-ackrediterat covid-19-testlaboratorium som tas 72 timmar före ankomst krävs för att få tillåtet inträde. Resenärer rekommenderas också att observera strikt karantän efter att ha genomgått RT-PCR-testet fram till deras avgångsdatum.

Om dina bokningar har avbrutit eller flygplaner ändrats i sista minuten, kan du kanske få ditt RT-PCR-test gjort vid ankomsten till Bohol. Om du gör detta, skulle du behöva fylla och underteckna ett åtagande om att du går med på att genomgå strikt hotellkarantän medan du väntar på ditt testresultat.

Om du kommer att stanna i mer än 5 dagar kommer du att behöva få ytterligare ett RT-PCR-test gjort på den femte dagen för din vistelse.

2. Bekräftad hotellbokning

Besökare måste ha en bekräftad bokning med ett boende beläget i kommunen Panglao eller Dauis. Boendeanläggningen bör också ha ett myndighetscertifikat att driva (CAO) från DOT eller Ultimate Bohol Experience (UBE) SEAL från provinsregeringen i Bohol.

3. Registrering via Bohol Tourist Registration Portal.

Alla resenärer som åker till Bohol måste registrera sig online. Du kan hitta registreringsformuläret på Tourism.Bohol.gov.ph. Klicka bara på check -in Bohol -menyn och klicka på möss/händelseregistrering.

Du kommer att behöva ange detaljerna om evenemanget du kommer att delta, din flygning, tillsammans med din personliga information. Efter en framgångsrik registrering skickas du nödvändig information och instruktioner via e -post.

Du kommer också att få en personlig QR -kod som kommer att fungera som en elektronisk besökares ID. Du måste spara den här QR -koden på din mobila enhet eftersom detta kommer att skannas vid ingång och utgång av anläggningar och webbplatser.

Dear Travelers,

While I was in Sigiriya, Sri Lanka, eating kottu (a traditional spicy stir-fry of shredded roti bread with vegetables and chicken), I noticed a scene outside the restaurant that I’ve witnessed too many times before: tourists riding an elephant. I sighed in despair. That animal they were so happily riding was mostly likely abused – and they either had no idea or they simply didn’t care.

I understand their desire to ride that elephant.

Most people love animals.

We all love seeing and interacting with animals when we travel. It feels exotic.

It’s why we go on safaris, check out zoos and tiger temples, and sign up for elephant rides, go gorilla trekking, take lion walks, and everything in between.

I mean, who wouldn’t want to be that close to so many stunning creatures? animals are cute and (mostly) furry.

But I have some bad news: almost all animal-based tourism in the world is abusive and detrimental to the animals.

Animals are usually kept in horrible conditions and trained and managed by inexperienced staff. These aren’t scientific research centers you are visiting. The places you check out exist for your entertainment and money — not for the animal’s welfare.

Now, I’m no saint. I’ve done bad things in the past. I’ve ridden elephants, been to the tiger temple, visited Seaworld, and swam with dolphins. I’ve been guilty of patronizing the same places I am now telling you to avoid.

But the longer I work in the travel industry and the more learn about animal tourism, the more I’ve come to realize just how messed up, flawed, and abusive it is. If I knew then what I knew now, I would have never done those activities.

Chances are you’re like me and see these activities and think “Animals! Jippie!”

There’s a false belief that these activities must have some regulations and are safe for animals. I mean that’s what I thought. I didn’t know what I didn’t know.

But that is not the case at all.

By visiting these institutions, we unintentionally become party to the system and perpetuate the cycle of abuse.

We don’t do it because we’re bad people. It’s simply ignorance of conditions that keeps us from changing the system.

I know we all want to believe that the place we’ve chosen to check out is harmless. We’ve done some research and read some positives reviews that said how kind and valuable the staff was to the animals. It looked safe.

But who would admit to animal abuse? who would leave put that in the open?

All of it is hidden from view.

No organization is going to say, “Yeah, we starve the elephants. kom in!”

Elephants are expensive to keep and, when saddled with debt, many trainers simply push their elephants to their limits in order to make as much money as possible. And, while the trainers may have their hearts in the right place, in many developing countries these aren’t professionally trained staff or biologists — they are poor, underskilled workers who are just trying to make money to feed their family.

Look at the elephant who killed someone in Ko Samui. He was working in unbearable heat and shouldn’t have been carrying riders, but the trainer was a poor Burmese immigrant who was in Thailand just trying to feed his family.

If you look at the trainers interviewed in The Cove or Blackfish, you see the same thing: trainers with good intentions but also a boss or corporation focused on profits instead of animal welfare.

For years, animal rights and environmental groups railed against the Tiger temple in Thailand. Journalists reported abuses. Yet tourists didn’t believe the news and still flocked to the temple. “They’re monks. how could they hurt the tigers?”

Yet, after outside pressure grew too great, the government raided the temple and — shocker! — found a host of abused and dead tigers, and evidence of illegal breeding and animal smuggling. but even though this tiger temple proved to be involved in the illegal animal trade, check outs to other tiger temples haven’t stopped.

The truth is there is a lot of animal abuse in the travel industry.

And it should be avoided. The chance of error is far too great. The problem is more widespread than you think.

Elephant rides, tiger temples, lion walks, monkey shows, orangutan fights (yes, that really exists), dolphinariums, Seaworld, circuses — anything where the animal is there exclusively for your entertainment should be avoided!

Consider the smell test for any animal exhibit: if it seems like this shouldn’t exist or you find it weird that such a large animal would be so docile, something is probably not right and you shouldn’t be supporting such practices with your money.

We can still get that memorable moment with an animal while making sure we are doing good.

Take elephant riding in Thailand. It’s been popular for decades and is still a big draw for tourists, but places like Elephant Nature Park are changing theSystem genom att tillhandahålla en fristad för misshandlade elefanter, främja utbildning för besökare och låta turister uppleva elefanterna på ett ohlikligt sätt.

Och när man ser hur mycket pengar Elephant Nature Park gör börjar andra träningsparker långsamt förändra hur de gör saker och arbetar med Elephant Nature Park för att anta mindre skadliga praxis.

Det finns nu parker i Phuket, Kambodja och Surin.

Det är inte att säga att denna förändring är utbredd, men eftersom det är pengar som upprätthåller systemet, ju fler människor röstar med sina dollar, desto fler djurparker kommer att förändra sin politik. Elephant Nature Park skulle inte existera utan att turister besöker, och andra parker skulle inte notera om det inte var för populariteten i deras praxis.

Det är viktigt att vi gör vår due diligence och röstar med våra dollar för att stödja organisationer som gör rätt av djur.

Om vi ​​står tillsammans och säger “vi vill ha något annat”, kan vi få det att hända. Tiger -templet stängdes slutligen, SeaWorld har gått med på att stoppa sitt fångstavelsprogram, och platser som liknar Elephant Nature Park sprider sig över hela Sydostasien.

Dessa förändringar har skett på grund av offentligt skrik och förändrat konsumentbeteende som påverkar vad företag bryr sig mest om: deras slutlinje.

Det handlar om utbildning. Om vi ​​som resenärer lär sig om dessa villkor i förväg, om vi pratar om dem mer, kan vi göra en förändring.

1. Amsterdam

Jag kan inte säga exakt hur många gånger jag har varit i Amsterdam, men det är i tvåsiffrorna. Och för en kort tid i slutet av 2006 bodde jag där som en professionell pokerspelare (allvarligt. Det är en av de mer intressanta slumpmässiga fakta om mig!).

Det snabba livet, vänliga lokalbefolkningen, enkel tillgång till resten av Europa, pittoreska kanaler och fantastisk arkitektur gör att jag kommer tillbaka. Dessutom är det Amsterdam och allt, det finns massor av konstiga och udda saker att se och göra där också!

På vissa sätt påminner Amsterdam mig om min hemstad Boston, det kan vara därför jag älskar det så mycket. Tegelbyggnaderna, snabbt rörande människor, stram vibe. Det känns som hemma.

2. Paris

Ända sedan jag gick ut på Champs Elysées, visste jag att Paris var det. Det var allt jag drömde att det skulle vara jag var kär från första ögonblicket. Visst, Paris är stor och dyr och sprickande av turister. Men vilken storstad är det inte så?

Paris är vacker, livlig och fylld med välsmakande mat och historia. Att vara här är som att vara i en verklig romantisk komedi. Jag älskar staden så mycket att jag till och med flyttade dit för en bra bit av 2019. Den lever verkligen upp till all hype, särskilt när du flyttar bort från turistområdena och till de lokala platserna mer.

Favoritaktivitet: Att plocka upp god mat på marknaden och ha en picknick.

3. Bangkok

Jag hatade Bangkok de första gångerna jag reste dit. Det var helt enkelt en smutsig, förorenad stad utan återlösande egenskaper. Det var inte förrän jag flyttade dit att jag blev kär i det.

Bangkok, visar det sig, är en enkel stad att bo i – det finns mycket att göra, massor av evenemang, fantastiska barer, underbar mat (ingenting slår thailändsk gatamat) och ännu mer underbara människor. Det är bara en dålig turiststad. Det finns bara inte mycket att göra där för en turist. Det är en stad du bor i.

4. Stockholm

Jag har en stark affinitet för alla saker skandinaviska, och Stockholm är inget undantag. Jag har varit där en handfull gånger under åren, och jag försökte till och med flytta dit för år sedan (det fungerade inte).

Jag tror att den här staden är en av de mest pittoreska jag någonsin har sett. Byggnadernas röda och gröna har en gammal världs charm som konkurrerar städer som Prag, och under hösten belyser de föränderliga bladen bara den skönheten.

Stockholm är också mycket historisk, med hög livskvalitet, och svenskarna i staden är supervänliga och välkomnande. Det är inte en billig stad att besöka, men det är värt vartenda öre!

5. New York City

Jag har tillbringat en lång tid på att resa världen och har varit i hundratals hundratals städer i världen. Det finns så många att jag älskar av många olika skäl – vissa för konst, några för historia, andra för maten, mest för folket.

Men för mig är de som sticker ut mest de där jag känner mig mest hemma. Det är platser jag checkar ut och känner mig ansluten också. Deras energi och min energimatch. Jag rör mig lätt runt dem, jag känner mig en med kulturen och tempot i staden.

Jag tänker för mig själv “Ja, jag kunde bo här.” Inte bara kolla in utan lev.

Och när jag tror det, då vet jag att jag har hittat en speciell plats.

1. Amsterdam

Jag kan inte säga exakt hur många gånger jag har varit i Amsterdam, men det är i tvåsiffrorna. Och för en kort tid i slutet av 2006 bodde jag där som en professionell pokerspelare (allvarligt. Det är en av de mer intressanta slumpmässiga fakta om mig!).

Det snabba livet, vänliga lokalbefolkningen, enkel tillgång till resten av Europa, pittoreska kanaler och fantastisk arkitektur gör att jag kommer tillbaka. Dessutom är det Amsterdam och allt, det finns massor av konstiga och udda saker att se och göra där också!

På vissa sätt påminner Amsterdam mig om min hemstad Boston, det kan vara därför jag älskar det så mycket. Tegelbyggnaderna, snabbt rörande människor, stram vibe. Det känns som hemma.

2. Paris

Ända sedan jag gick ut på Champs Elysées, visste jag att Paris var det. Det var allt jag drömde att det skulle vara jag var kär från första ögonblicket. Visst, Paris är stor och dyr och sprickande av turister. Men vilken storstad är det inte så?

Paris är vacker, livlig och fylld med välsmakande mat och historia. Att vara här är som att vara i en verklig romantisk komedi. Jag älskar staden så mycket att jag till och med flyttade dit för en bra bit av 2019. Den lever verkligen upp till all hype, särskilt när du flyttar bort från turistområdena och till de lokala platserna mer.

Favoritaktivitet: Att plocka upp god mat på marknaden och ha en picknick.

3. Bangkok

Jag hatade Bangkok de första gångerna jag reste dit. Det var helt enkelt en smutsig, förorenad stad utan återlösande egenskaper. Det var inte förrän jag flyttade dit att jag blev kär i det.

Bangkok, visar det sig, är en enkel stad att bo i – det finns mycket att göra, massor av evenemang, fantastiska barer, underbar mat (ingenting slår thailändsk gatamat) och ännu mer underbara människor. Det är bara en dålig turiststad. Det finns bara inte mycket att göra där för en turist. Det är en stad du bor i.

Att bo i Bangkok visade mig att utseende kan lura och att det finns mer till en stad än vad du ser på ytan. Du behöver bara vara villig att se lite djupare ut.

But it wasn’t until last year when I spent a month in the city that I really “got” it. I understood why people loved it. There was a charming sophistication to the place.

Strolling the streets of the city, enjoying the markets, taking in the history of the place, laying in the park, and having a pint outside a pub? Himmel.

Paris will always have my heart but London comes close.

Favorite activity: visiting as many museums as I can and then drinking at a pub.

13. Oaxaca

Oaxaca, a city in the central part of the Pacific coast of Mexico, is a hub for heritage tourism, owing to its many historical attractions (including Monte Albán, a UNESCO Heritage Site; and Mitla, a Zapotec archeological site), colorful buildings, scenic rooftop restaurants and bars, street art, historic Spanish colonial churches, cobblestone streets, and many parks.

The city has everything I like: history, Mezcal, and food. Oaxaca is one of the gastronomic centers of Mexico and was the place I fell most in love with during my check out to the country. It’s safe, the people are wonderful, the buildings are beautiful, and the food…did I mention the food? It’s out of this world.

Within seconds of landing here, I knew I belonged. I could easily live here I love it so much.

Favorite activity: visiting the mezcalerías.

14. Cape Town

Cape town is one of those places I can never get enough of. Its natural beauty, climate, people, chill atmosphere, and delicious food scene always make my check outs memorable. Head up Table mountain and Lion’s Head to soak up the city’s iconic view, walk the famous boardwalk along Muizenberg Beach, and check out the Robben Island prison where Nelson Mandela spent 27 years behind bars. Also, don’t miss the penguins at Boulder Beach. They’re super cool.

Seoul har tre inofficiella turistdistrikt på grund av den höga koncentrationen av alternativ för budgetlogi: Jongno, Myeongdong och Hongdae. Vilken är bäst? Tja, jag hatar att svara med “det beror”, men jag måste säga, “Det beror.” Haha.

Saken är att alla tre distrikten är lättillgängliga från flygplatsen och är alla nära stora turistplatser, så det slutligen kokar ner till två saker: vibe och din resplan. Vibe, eftersom alla tre främjar sin egen unika atmosfär. Din resplan, eftersom de ligger inom gångavstånd från några viktiga attraktioner. Du kanske vill överväga att bo i området där de flesta platser du kommer att besöka finns.

Myeongdong. Seouls huvudsakliga shoppingdistrikt, prickade med butiker och varuhus. Nära Myeongdong Shopping Street och Namdaemun Market. Om du älskar att shoppa, stanna här. Kontrollera hastigheterna för Myeongdong -hotell här.

Hongdae-Sinchon. Seoul’s University Belt. Denna plats drivs av Seouls ungdomskultur och vårdar en mer romantisk och underjordisk atmosfär. Massor av kreativa och udda butiker och matplatser. Nära: Hongik University Street, Hongik Mural Street och Ehwa Women’s University. Om du är en mat, stanna här. Kontrollfrekvensen för Hongdae -hotell här.

Jongno. Seouls historiska kärna. Dess karta är full av helgedomar, tempel och andra traditionella platser. Faktum är att fyra av stadens fem stora palats finns i Jongno. Det är också där byn Bukchon Hanok, Gwangjang Market och Insa-dong finns. Om det är din första gång i Seoul, stanna här. Kontrollera hastigheterna på jongno -hotell här.

Jag har upplevt att bo i alla tre distrikten, och jag föredrar personligen Jongno. Det finns bara så mycket att se och utforska här.

Aka helt gästhus. Beläget i Jongno. Tidiga rum och utmärkt service. Perfekt om du också är intresserad av att träffa andra resenärer. Platsen kunde inte vara bättre: Seouls viktigaste historiska platser ligger alla inom gångavstånd. Lätt tillgängligt från flygplatsen.

Hur man kommer dit från Incheon Airport: Board Bus 6002 vid Gate 5B eller 12A och tänds på Jong-No 3GA Station.

Priser: Vi betalade KRW 58 000 (49,6 USD, 46,4 euro, 2470 php) per natt för ett tvillingrum.

Hongdae Pencil Guesthouse

Beläget bara ett kvarter från Hongik University Station (avfart 3) och en kort promenad från Hongdae University Street. Massor av fantastiska men billiga matplatser och närbutiker runt. Rummet som gavs oss var snyggt och korrekt underhållet. Vanliga områden var lite små, men under min vistelse var de aldrig trångt. Personalen var inte så vänlig som jag är van vid, men ändå okej. Sammantaget trevlig upplevelse.

Hur man kommer dit från Incheon Airport: Board Bus 6002 vid Gate 5B eller 12A och tänds vid Hongik University Station.

Priser: Vi betalade KRW 68 000 (58 USD, 54 euro, 2900 php) per natt för ett tvillingrum.

Namsan Hill Hotel i Myeongdong

Namsan City Hotel Twin Room
Jag stannar normalt inte på hotell, men när jag såg att kostnaden inte var så långt ifrån vandrarhem bestämde jag mig för att prova. Det är ett hotell med begränsad service men ändå ett legitimt hotell. Rummet jag fick var liten men superren och hade sängar på hotellkvalitet (för återigen är det ett hotell, haha). Myeongdong Shopping Street ligger bara en promenad bort, om än en lång. Men det är bara en station bort vid Subway, vilket är bekvämt eftersom Namsan City Hotel står bara några meter från avfart 3 på Hoehyeon Station.

Hur man kommer dit från Incheon Airport: med buss. Styrelsebuss 6015 vid Gate 5B eller 11B och tänds på Namdaemun Market. Gå över marknaden så hittar du hotellet på andra sidan vägen. Du kan också nå det enkelt med tåg. Rida bara Airport Railway Express (AREX) tåg till Seoul Station, överför till linje 4 och gå av på Hoehyeon Station. Ta utgång 3.

Priser: Vi betalade KRW 78 700 (67 USD, 63 euro, 3355 php) per natt för ett tvillingrum.

1. Versailles

Located southwest of Paris, Versailles is best known for its royal palace, the Château de Versailles. built in 1682, it served as the residence for three generations of monarchs — King Louis XIV, King Louis XV, and the last king of France, King Louis XVI.

This UNESCO world Heritage site is so vast; you have to dedicate a whole day to explore it. aside from the grand palace, don’t miss other points of interest including the royal Apartments, the Grand Gallery (particularly the Hall of Mirrors), the royal Chapel, the royal Opera, and the gardens surrounding them. 2. Saint-Denis

Located practically 10km north of Paris, the suburban Saint-Denis is well-known for its 12th-century basilica. From being a easy abbey, which was commissioned by King Dagobert I and was built on the burial place of St. Denis, it developed into a historical landmark that not only functions as a religious institution but also served as the final resting place of several monarchs av Frankrike.

The basilica is also a model architectural style that reflects the transition from Romanesque to the medieval Gothic design. The original abbey dates back to the 7th century.

Other attractions are the national stadium of France, Stade de France, and Cité du Cinéma. From Paris, you can take the regional train or the Metro train bound for Saint-Denis.

Nearest Train Station: There are three regional railway stations and five Paris Metro stations operating within the city. The nearest station will depend on which attraction you want to tackle first. RER D and B Trains operate to Saint-Denis.

3. Mont Saint Michel

Located in the region of Normandy, over 300 kilometers west of Paris, Mont Saint Michel is
a commune set on a tidal sandbank. This small, historic island is noted as a UNESCO world Heritage Site. It covers an area of about 7 hectares and is best known for its massive abbey that perched atop it like a sentinel guarding the island.

The Gothic-style abbey was dedicated to Archangel Michael, who was said to appear to a bishop while on the island in 709 AD. This makes the island a popular pilgrimage destination.

Nearest Train Station: Rennes Station. From here, it requires a bus ride to Mont Saint Michel. The total travel time is about 3.5 hours. From Montparnasse Station, the fare to Rennes starts at €43.

4. Fontainebleau

Fontainebleu is a favorite weekend destination for locals and another option for a day trip from Paris if you are clamoring for much more royal residences and historic places. It has sprawling verdant woods, Fontainebleau Forest, that nurtures diverse flora and fauna and a site for outdoor activities such as trekking and climbing.

Another asset is the UNESCO-inscribed Château de Fontainebleau (PAlace of Fontainebleau), som officiellt blev ett nationellt museum 1927. 6. Bourgogne

Bourgogne är en av de mest produktiva och många kända vinproducerande regionerna i Frankrike. Vinodlingarna av Bourgogne är kända för att producera prisade röda och vita viner från Pinot Noir och Chardonnay-druvor.

7. Normandys historiska stränder

8. Giverny

Beläget i den övre Normandie-regionen, kan Giverny nås efter en timmes tågresa från Paris.

Vilka charms människor är det faktum att den franska impressionistmålaren, Claude Monet, hade valt att leva och arbeta här under det sista kvartalet av 1800-talet fram till hans död 1926. Hans hem, inklusive trädgårdarna, återställdes och blev ett museum 1980.
